Gout and Sugary Beverages

Sugar can increase gout.Gout sufferers have been informed previously that limiting sugary beverage intake may help to relieve their symptoms, when taken along with natural supplements. Further investigation has been conducted regarding the link between high fructose corn syrup and gout.

Specifics of the research
In this study, professionals looked both at the relationship between sugar-sweetened beverages and gout as well as at the possibility that patients may be at an increased risk of developing the disease due to genetic variants of the genotype SLC2A9 – which is responsible for exchanging uric acid for glucose and fructose. There were 1,634 participants who were split between control and test groups. The separation was made based on sugary beverage intake: those who consumed non versus those who enjoyed approximately four beverages daily.

Based on their findings, researchers found that those who drank the products were at a seven time greater risk for developing gout. In the past, some studies have shown a two- to threefold increase in risk for Americans who drank two or more of these beverages. However, this information implies that the association between the two is much higher than originally thought.

“So not only does sugar raise uric acid in the blood due to processing in the liver, but it also appears to directly interfere with excretion of uric acid from the kidney,” Tony Merriman, a researcher on the study, said in a statement.

Additionally, it was found that patients who had a SLC2A9 gene that behaved correctly were at a lesser risk that those who did not. This means that their genotypes were able to remove uric acid from the blood stream by working with the kidney. Those whose gene acted otherwise saw a greater chance for developing gout.

Avoiding gout attacks
Based on the findings of this study, researchers from the University of Otago have indicated that they believe limiting sugar-sweetened beverage intake may help to reduce a patient’s risk for suffering from a gout attack. However, it should be noted that eliminating sodas and other drinks from one’s diet will not necessarily do the trick on its own. Beverages such as beer are also likely to increase an individual’s risk and consumption should be limited, if not altogether avoided.

If you have been diagnosed with gout, you may want to consider natural options for managing uric acids with advanced supplements like GR-911 before, during and following an attack. Depending on which category you fall into, your intake will differ. In addition to monitoring your liquid consumption and taking these supplements, you can also better track your diet and eliminate high-purine foods like red meat. On top of that, a regular exercise routine may also reduce your risk of a bout. It’s important to first consult a health care professional regarding any dramatic changes you are making to your lifestyle or natural remedies you are incorporating to your routine.
