Colon health update
For instance, it’s well-known that smoking can cause a number of health issues, but a recent study found that it can also increase a woman’s risk for colon cancer. Professionals of the University of Tromso who were conducting the study had prior knowledge that smoking was an attributing factor of colon cancer. Their intention for this research was to investigate a hypothesis that females who smoke were more susceptible than males.
From 1972 until 2003, the researchers followed 602,242 patients who ranged from the age of 19 to 67. Fourteen years after starting the study, the participants followed-up and it was found that 3,998 had developed colon cancer and 46 percent of those were women. The information collected showed that female ever-smokers were at a 19 percent increased risk of colon cancer, compared to just an 8 percent increased risk of male ever-smokers. It was concluded by researchers that female smokers are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer than male smokers.
“If you smoke, you should quit,” Dan Jacobsen, from the Center for Tobacco Control at North Shore, advised in Health Magazine. “Smoking is just toxic to our bodies, it’s the number one preventable cause of death and disease.”
